Experts of the Center for Excellence in Molecular Biology of Pakistan and representatives of the Islamic Development Bank visited the Institute of Genetic Resources of ANAS

Experts of the Center for Excellence in Molecular Biology of Pakistan (PMBMM) and representatives of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) started a 5-day visit to the Institute of Genetic Resources of ANAS on 23.05.2022. The purpose of the visit is a diagnostic mission of the GEI to present a joint project on genome editing in the Cotton plant in 2019 with colleagues in Pakistan. The guests met with the Director General of the Institute, corresponding member of ANAS Zeynal Akparov on May 23, 2022. Zeynal Akparov informed about the activities of the institute, research on the development of cotton growing at the institute and noted the successful results in this field. Then PMBMM experts: Punjab University, PMBMM Director Dr. Tayyab Husnain, Center selection specialist Dr. Idrees Ahmad, Genome Editing Specialist Dr. Abdul Qayyum Rao and IDB representatives: Regional Coordinator Ahmad Faruk Diken, Central Asia Coordinator Kokorjan Aminov (Tajikistan) and the representative of the Azerbaijani office Lala Yusifova informed about the work to be done during the 5-day visit. The event was continued around the round table in the assembly hall of the institute and presentations were heard. Dr. Abdul Qayyum Rao, Professor and Head of the Department of Plant Biotechnology, Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan, made a presentation on “Transgenic Approaches to Genome Editing and Improving Important Product Features” and answered many questions. Then the head of the department of technical and fodder plants of the institute b.ü.f.d. Ruhangiz Mammadova's presentation on "Cotton collection samples and selection achievements of ANAS GEI" was heard. In the second half of the day, the guests got acquainted with the activities of the relevant departments and laboratories of the institute. The experts visiting Azerbaijan will submit their opinions to the Islamic Development Bank after conducting a preliminary assessment.
