Researchers from the Genetic Resources Institute continue to conduct floristic surveys and assess plant diversity in the Zuvand region of Lerik region.

The surveys have documented valuable wild plant specimens occurring at different elevations, including diverse forms of wild rose (Rosa spp.) with flowers of different colors, Dargil species, wild buckthorn, prickly lettuce, wild beet, and other plant species.

During the field studies, wild fig (Ficus carica L.) specimens growing among rocky habitats at an elevation of 2,001 m were also recorded. In addition, almond orchards established in the 1970s at the initiative of Academician Hasan Aliyev are being preserved and studied as gene pool plantations.

Characterized by high floristic and genetic diversity, the Zuvand region is considered an important area for the conservation, assessment, and sustainable use of genetic resources of fruit, berry, vegetable, and wild plant species in Azerbaijan.
