Director of Genetic Resources Institute of ANAS has attended at the 1st International Agrobiodiversity Congress in India

Director of Genetic Resources Institute (GRI) of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), corresponding member of ANAS Dr. Zeynal Akparov has visited New Dehli, India on Novermber 6-9.

He represented Azerbaijan at the 1st International Agrobiodiversity Congress (IAC) co-organised byBioversity International, a CGIAR Research Centerheadquartered in Rome, Italyand Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources. Representatives of more than 10 international - FAO, CIMMYT, ICARDA, ICRISAT and others - and more than 40 national scientific centres attended the event.

This prestigious global event attended by more than 900 renowned scientists from 5 continents and more than 60 countries of the world was dedicated to high-level discussions on research results, future needs and priorities, as well challenges of new century connected with realible protection and efficient use of agrobiodiversity in the world.

Honorable Prime Minister of India, ShriNarendraModiinaugurated the Congress with an address and wished it success.

"Indian Father of Green Revolution", professor M.S.Swaminathan, founderof National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) of India, professor Rajendra Singh Paroda, high-level officials and renowed scientific figures chaired this international event.

Corresponding member of ANAS Dr. Zeynal Akparov provided an insight to the participants of the congress into activities carried out in Azerbaijan, obtained achievements and development plans connected with the agrobiodiversity.

On the sidelines of the bilateral and multilateral meetings he exchanged views on the issues representing reciprocal interest, as well as defined shapes of future scientific and technical cooperation between Azerbaijani scientific research institutes and international centres and foreign scientific organisations in the sphere of biodiversity.

At the end,participants of the 1st IAC accepted a New Dehli Declaration. Along with very important issues, the Declaration urged to announce a Year of Agrobiodiversity.
